Fundraiser set for Aug. 8-9 benefiting Reading woman badly hurt in fall

The Reading woman badly hurt in a fall from a hotel balcony last month has been transferred to an acute care facility in Kansas City.

Stephanie Smith had attended a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium on July 13, but when she returned to her hotel in Independence, Mo., she somehow fell five stories from her balcony. Fundraising coordinator Melissa Siler says Smith had climbed onto the balcony to get a better view of the so-called "super moon" that night, but she lost her balance.

Smith has already had four surgeries and the goal, Siler says, is to get Smith walking again. Smith was originally at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence before her transfer, and she says the town of Reading has rallied around Smith.
