Updated: Crews working to fix water main breaks

Two water main breaks are making life uncomfortable for certain neighborhoods in Emporia.

City staffers are in the process of fixing a 10-inch main in the 800 block of Sylvan, while a private contractor is repairing a six-inch line at Sixth and Wilson.

Underground Utilities Supervisor Gary Sadowski tells KVOE News Sylvan is shut down from Eighth to Ninth, quite possibly through late afternoon. About 20 residential customers are affected.

He says the quarter-century old pipe was due to be replaced this year, but work has been delayed.

At Sixth and Wilson, traffic is still moving past the break site but service has been shut down a block in all directions. Around 50 customers are impacted, although Sadowski isn't sure how many businesses are affected.

He says soil shifting likely caused both breaks.
