Newman Regional Health has announced it is closing its primary care clinic and medical equipment outlet in Osage City, and primary care clinic in Madison effective Aug. 1. A surgery clinic staffed by NRH physicians in Eureka will also close on that date.
This decision comes after legal counsel representing the hospital determined that Kansas law does not allow county hospitals to fund facilities outside of their home county, even if those facilities are operated by corporations governed separately from the hospital. The hospital was in the process of applying for tax-exempt status for their corporation Newman Medical Services, Inc., when legal counsel advised the hospital that this structure did not provide sufficient legal authority for NRH to operate the satellite facilities.
Patients at these locations will be informed of the closings Monday, and are encouraged to continue their care at NRH in Emporia. Staff have been offered employment at the family practice clinic in Emporia.
