Fundraising planned soon for All Veterans Memorial improvements

By mid-August, if not sooner, final plans could be in place for a major addition to Emporia's All Veterans Memorial.

Organizer Frank Lowery announced upgrades during the city's Memorial Day observance about six weeks ago and detailed those on KVOE's Newsmaker segment Friday. He says the improvements will be on the north side of the property.

The plan is to have room for as many as 480 names on the granite "tablets of honor."

Lowery says the project stems from several related items: ongoing requests for individual names on plaques, lack of available space for that option and damage to the plaques originally laid along some of the walkways.

The plaques currently at ground level will be refinished and moved to the top of the tablets.

Local architect Dave Emig produced the artist renderings. Costs haven't been determined yet and fundraising will begin once the final plans are outlined.
