Greenwood County authorities investigating death involving utility vehicle

The Greenwood County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident involving an all-terrain vehicle, which led to the death of a Eureka man.

Greenwood County deputies, along with Greenwood County EMS and Eureka Rescue, responded to a call at around 4:55am Wednesday morning of a utility terrain vehicle, or UTV, had rolled over on someone. Emergency crews arrived at Road R50, about 1.5 miles east and 2 miles north of Eureka. Upon arrival, they found 44-year old Larry Birkholz had died as the result of a rollover accident in a Polaris Ranger UTV.

The initial investigation indicates Birkholz was southbound on R50, and attempted to turn around. He made a U-turn and went up onto the embankment on the east side of the road, when the UTV overturned on its side, pinning Birkholz beneath it. It's believed that Birkholz was pinned for several hours before he was discovered.

Birkholz was not wearing his safety restraint.

The accident is still under investigation.
