Murder victim names confirmed; AG office says suspect may not have traveled far

A week after a shooting near Eureka left two people dead and a third badly hurt, the Kansas Attorney General's Office has finally confirmed the victim names. It also says the suspect, 35-year-old Kevin Welsh, is still at large and may still be in Greenwood County.

Spokesman Don Brown says Keith Kriesel, 54, and his wife, 52-year-old Sheila Kriesel, were killed the evening of Oct. 2 at a house outside Eureka. Catherine Scheff, the daughter of Sheila Kriesel and the stepdaughter of Keith Kriesel, was wounded both in the shooting and in a car crash trying to escape the scene.

Scheff is receiving treatment at Wichita's Wesley Medical Center. On Tuesday night, a hospital operator said she was no longer at the hospital. On Wednesday, however, an operator says she is in protective care and thus no information can be released about her condition.

Scheff was a former girlfriend of Welsh, and authorities believe domestic violence was a factor in the shooting.

Welsh is six feet tall, 185 pounds with reddish hair and possibly a dyed-black goatee at last word. He was set for a preliminary hearing later this month on kidnapping, aggravated assault and domestic battery charges.

If you have seen Welsh, or if you have information leading to Welsh, call the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at 800-KS-CRIME.
