National Night Out planning, organizing continues

National Night Out is coming up Aug. 5, and Tuesday's informational meeting provided details about the event itself, and its purpose.

National Night Out is meant to bring neighborhood residents together with law enforcement and firefighters to get to know each other as a way of fighting crime, and also on how to set up block parties if you live in Emporia.

Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Sage says it's an evening meant for fun, with some guest appearances in the works.

Sage says interest in this year's event is gaining traction. Lyon County Deputy Jacob Welsh says this year's approach involves a little more independence and self-motivation on the part of surrounding small towns.
