For the last several years, Emporia and Lyon County residents have celebrated National Night Out on a different night than most of the rest of the country. That is changing this year, with local residents using Aug. 5 -- like most everybody else -- for the grassroots anti-crime event.

A special information meeting is coming from 5:30 to 6:30 pm Tuesday at the Bowyer Community Building. There will be information about the event itself, which brings neighborhood residents together with law enforcement and firefighters to get to know each other as a way of fighting crime, and also on how to set up block parties if you live in Emporia.
For information, call Deputy Jacob Welsh at 341-3354 or Police Sgt. Lisa Sage at 343-4200. You can also go online to www.natw.org.
