Political season is here, and candidates for various offices are fast becoming a regular occurrence in the area with the primary set for Aug. 5. KVOE is now starting a closer look at the candidates as the primary nears.
A batch of candidates, mainly for state offices, came to Emporia recently. On that list was Scott Morgan, a Republican hoping to unseat current Secretary of State Kris Kobach. If elected, the one-time staff counsel for U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, attorney and book publisher hopes to reverse what he calls a "part-time" approach to the office from Kobach.
Morgan and his wife, Kathleen, have worked in the U.S. Department of Transportation, and Morgan also worked with Gov. Mike Hayden as director of federal affairs and chief counsel. He also served two terms on the Lawrence School Board, and he says his experience makes him uniquely qualified for the position. He also says the Secretary of State position needs to look at voters and businesses as customers, not victims.
Morgan, a Shawnee native and fifth-generation Kansan, graduated from KU with journalism and law degrees. The Morgans have three children.
