Pianos on the Pavement filling downtown Emporia with sound

Pianos on the Pavement is plinking along in downtown Emporia for the next 10 days.

A dozen pianos are lining both sides of Commercial Street from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks all the way north to 12th. Organizer George Milton credited his wife, Gail, for starting the idea several years ago after seeing a similar idea in New York City.

Milton says a lot of people offer their pianos for playing, but it gets difficult to store and move them -- so having 12 to 15 pianos is a good number.

The Miltons have tied the activity to the annual Symphony in the Flint Hills, which will be held June 14 in Butler County. The pianos will be out on Commercial Street until the week of June 16.
