Several summer projects slated for USD 253

USD 253 Emporia has a few projects to keep them busy this summer.

Roofs are being replaced at both Mary Herbert and Maynard Early Childhood Education Center. Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations Rob Scheib says a pre-construction meeting should be taking place this week, but it hasn't been officially scheduled yet.

The district also has a house auction coming up soon, for a home on the Logan Avenue School playground.

The house's official address is 501 South Sylvan. Scheib says the home is in decent shape, but would've cost the district more to renovate into office or learning extension space than it was worth.

The board also recently opened bids for the Jones Activity Center, and will be reviewing them soon. Scheib says they're hoping to get started on that project within 30 days of the next board meeting on the 28th. Scheib says there has been plenty of support for this project, which includes a new metal building behind Emporia High School, which would house various athletic and extracurricular events.

Over $535,000 has been raised for the project.

Other summer work -- besides the regular deep-cleaning and maintenance to district building -- includes installing new technology across the district, including new defibrillators, laptops, upgraded fiber internet access, and math books with an extra digital application.

The last day of school is this Thursday the 22nd.
