Emporia Rec Commission moves forward with fitness room/exercise studio project

The Emporia Recreation Commission had a pretty cut-and-dry monthly meeting Monday.

Board members approved the releasing of bids for the fitness room/exercise studio renovation project. Director Tom McEvoy said the board will review and approve the bids in July, with a tentative construction date set for September.

The project will increase space on the first floor for the fitness room and exercise studio, and make infrastructure improvements. Some of the exercise equipment currently in use is over 20 years old, and being held together with bailing wire. The commission's waiting on a new space to be built, before they purchase new equipment. $300,000 was budgeted for this project, with $150,000 set aside for new fitness equipment.

The board also approved the budget for fiscal 2014/15 with no changes, and approved the management agreement with the city of Emporia to manage the Jones Aquatic Center. McEvoy said this was a technicality the board renews every year. Jones Aquatic Center is slated to open this Saturday the 24th.
