Wichita motorcycle driver hurt, dog dies in crash near Reading

One person was hurt after a motorcycle collided with a dog in northeast Lyon County on Saturday afternoon.

Deputy Richard Johnson says the motorcyclist, 26-year-old John Kenny of Wichita, was northbound on Kansas Highway 99 when the accident happened around 2:30 pm. Kenny tried unsuccessfully to avoid the dog as it ran onto Highway 99 about a quarter-mile south of the junction with Kansas Highway 170, about seven miles due west of Reading.

The dog died in the crash. Kenny, who rolled into a ditch after his bike flipped onto its side and skidded along the highway, was taken afterward to Newman Regional Health with apparently non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities have not said who owned the dog or whether it was a stray.
