Senior Center raises $2,000 with pancake feed

Seniors and residents of other age groups will benefit from the Emporia Senior Center's annual pancake feed Saturday.

Center director Susan Riley says Emporia's facility serves seven counties, with activities from foot care clinics to dances to games like bingo.

Riley says the senior center is "a true asset" and "a hidden jewel" on Emporia's east side, saying everybody has a parent or grandparent who may need its services at some point in their lives.

Besides normal senior activities, the center also hosts various public meetings and events for different civic groups and churches.

The event raised $2,000, including a dollar-for-dollar match from Holiday Resort. Riley tells KVOE News the center receives a $35,000 allocation from Lyon County but needs at least $85,000 on top of that to pay the bills.
