Morning storms dump brief heavy rains, small hail

Strong thunderstorms from mid-morning Sunday eliminated the risk of more strong to severe storms later in the day.

Storms dumped heavy rain and small hail on Emporia shortly after 9 am, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning for Lyon and parts of Osage and Wabaunsee counties. No additional weather issues were reported.

A severe thunderstorm watch issued shortly after 6 am was allowed to expire on schedule at noon.

The KVOE studios received 0.50 inches of rain with activity early Sunday and with the mid-morning round.

The weather affected Sunday's community calendar. The Super Custom Car Show, a fundraiser for Emporia State University scholarships, and Party for the Planet, the David Traylor Zoo's celebration of Earth Day, have both been canceled. Zoo director Lisa Keith says some of the Party for the Planet activities may be rescheduled to take place during the zoo's open house in June.
