Thursday's Diabetes Health Fair brought a large crowd to the Bowyer Community Building to learn more about the disease. The fifth annual event, put on by Newman Regional Health, provides information about diabetes and the health complications that can accompany it.
The event's featured speaker was Newman Regional Wound Care Director and General Surgeon Dr. Tim Harris. Harris spoke about how diabetes affects wound care, mostly in regards to feet.
Information regarding healthy diets and prescriptions were on hand, as well as free blood pressure and blood sugar checks and foot screenings.
Diabetes now affects about 26 million people nationwide and about seven percent -- roughly 2,400 people -- in Lyon County.
