Planning Commission recommends conditional use permit, begins review of comprehensive plan

The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission recommended approval of a conditional use permit during its monthly meeting Tuesday night.

Southern Star Pipeline made the request so it could install a natural gas metering station in an agricultural district at 1500 Road "J."

The board also began discussions on the future land use map, making minor revisions in advance of more significant discussions over the next several months. Board member Kenton Thomas says the documents are a guide for both current and future development.

Thomas says the board has to study the comprehensive plan and the future land use map every several years. One item to resolve going forward is whether the board will handle most of the discussions by itself or whether to bring in stakeholders for a series of meetings.

Once board members sort through any potential changes, the Emporia City Commission will field those recommendations and have the final say. The document is online at www.emporia-kansas.gov.
