Earth Day marks start of eco-friendly period in Emporia

Tuesday is Earth Day, and while Emporia isn't hosting any specific activities today, this week is shaping up to be quite eco-friendly.

FHTC Sustainability Studies Director Amy Becker says there's plenty of recycling options locally.

Dillons also has a recycling tub located on-site. The curbside recycling program will be discussed during the city commission study session Wednesday, and e-waste matters will be talked about during the county commission meeting, also on Wednesday. Emporia is looking to become more eco-friendly, and Becker says it's never too late to get started with those healthy habits.

Friday is Arbor Day, and tree-planting will take place in various spots around Emporia -- including the planting of the mayor's tree at 10 am at Jones Aquatic Center. Following that is the Flint Hills Technical College Sustainability Fair on Saturday, from 9am to 2pm, and the Party For the Planet celebration at David Traylor Zoo on Sunday.
