Rape victim speaking out against violence during Take Back the Night

SOS and Emporia State University are partnering on the annual Take Back the Night event Wednesday night on campus.

Rape victim Mel Townsend will be the featured speaker. Six years ago, Townsend was victimized by a serial rapists and later testified in support of SB 167, which was designed to remove the statue of limitations for rape cases.

Townsend was a member of the University of Kansas volleyball team at the time. She has since graduated with a degree in sports management and is currently pursuing a dual master's degree in elementary and special education.

Take Back the Night is a worldwide rally intended to protest against sexual violence. Townsend's presentation is at 7 pm Wednesday at King Hall Bruder Theatre.
