There will be at least one challenger to Emporia Rep. Peggy Mast for the 76th District House seat next fall.
Teresa Briggs of Reading hopes to bring her past experience as Lyon County commissioner to the position if elected. A longtime Republican, she tells KVOE News she switched parties in January because of concerns she has about the state's direction.
Briggs spent four years as county commissioner before marrying Osage County rancher John Briggs. She is currently the director of the Mental Health Center's Regional Prevention Center of the Flint Hills.
Mast was first elected to the House in 1997. She served two years ago as assistant majority leader and last year as Speaker Pro Tem, but came under fire this past summer for supporting a two-year budget which led to a nearly $3 million funding cut to Emporia State University.
