Judge approves Kansas proof of citizenship push on federal voter registration forms

An effort by Kansas and Arizona state leaders to require their voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship has the approval of U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren.

The judge ruled the U.S. Election Assistance Commission has no grounds to deny requests from the two states to add state-specific instructions to its national voter registration form, which currently has prospective voters signing a statement indicating their citizenship.

Melgren said Congress lets states set individual voter qualifications and hasn't pre-empted that power.

Both Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett sued to force a decision. Representatives of the Election Assistance Commission have not yet commented on the decision or their course of action.
