Small fires keep EFD on move Saturday

Emporia firefighters handled two small fires Saturday.

Firefighters extinguished a small grass fire just outside Emporia's Kansas Turnpike exit around 2:30 pm. Fire Capt. Eron Steinlage says a planned burn jumped a fence, so firefighters went to the scene and doused the flames. Roughly an acre burned.

Around midnight, firefighters went to the 2400 block of Road "N," about six miles north of Emporia, for a small brush fire. Steinlage says the wind shifted during a planned burn, pushing the fire into some brush. There was minimal damage.

No injuries were reported with either incident. Property owner names have not been released.
