'Sacred Heart, Sacred Space' campaign moving into second phase

Sacred Heart Church has several major upgrades coming in the next few years.

The "Sacred Heart, Sacred Space" campaign is moving from the pledge phase to what's being called the "continuation" phase of redeeming pledges and starting construction.

Parishioner Amy Scheller says a big project coming up is installing a new heating, ventilation and cooling system in the church.

Other projects include a new handicapped-accessible north entrance to the church and shifting the adoration chapel from the parish hall to that new entrance, a new rectory for area priests, restoring the church's stained glass windows and adding a new parking lot on the south side of the church.

The pledge drive began last fall with a goal of $1.5 million, and Scheller said the goal was lofty -- but parishioners pledged that amount by February.

Sacred Heart has two ways it can approach the work ahead through 2018. Because of guidelines from the Kansas City, Kan., archdiocese, church administrators and Father Rich Warsnak have the option of trying to collect half the total amount, roughly $750,000, before starting -- or they can set a priority list, collecting half the money needed for individual projects and proceed that way.
