Green is the color of choice this weekend, and not just because St. Patrick's Day is Monday. Two local charitable groups are finalizing their fundraising activities on Saturday.
The St. Patrick's Committee is gearing up for its annual parade in downtown Emporia at 1 pm Saturday. Prior to that is the first Leprechaun Dash starting at Town Royal at 10:30 am. Cost is $30 to participate. Opportunities to win a 50-inch flat-screen TV and iPad Mini are also available. Suggested donations are $1 per chance or six for $5.
The 5-K, parade and prizes follow a successful auction late last month, which raised over $12,000 for nine community groups and the St. Patrick's Committee scholarship fund at Emporia State University. Organizer Barb Ternes:
Meanwhile, St. Baldrick's is getting its core fundraising started Friday night with a silent and live auction at the Bowyer Community Building. Activities start at 5:30 pm, with dinner at 6:30 and the live auction following. Afterward, the head-shaving starts at 1:30 pm at J-Mo's. Research efforts into pediatric cancers will benefit, and shavee Jose Feliciano says the money is desperately needed.
KVOE's Chuck Samples and Scott Hayes have been raising money for St. Baldrick's the past two months. You can call in your donation to the station at 342-1400 or go online to www.stbaldricks.org.
St. Patrick's Day activities aren't the only events on the calendar this weekend. The latest Women in the Outdoors event will be at Dry Creek Sporting Clays from 8 am to 5 pm. The featured guest is none other than Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, who was on What's In Outdoors with Phil Taunton on Friday. She discovered her love of the outdoors early on after was bullied as a child.
And Blackout Fighting Championships is holding BFC 20 at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building at 7 pm. Tickets are available at KVOE and the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce as well as online at www.cagetix.com.
