Osage County cold case murder suspect has first court appearance

Four months after first-degree murder charges were filed against him, James Harris had his first court appearance Thursday in the death of 50-year-old James Gerety.

Harris will have a preliminary hearing at 9 am March 14 in Osage County District Court.

Harris was charged in November but was serving a firearms charge in Texas, so he was not immediately available for court proceedings.

Harris is accused of murdering Gerety, whose remains were found near Carbondale in March 2012. Authorities believe Gerety could have been killed as early as April 2011.

Osage County and Shawnee County authorities investigated. Harris could receive life in prison if convicted.
