A giant in Emporia's real estate field has passed away.
Don Ek died Monday after a battle with pneumonia.
Ek had been a real estate broker since 1960 and started Ek Real Estate in 1965, turning it into Emporia's top-selling business for years. Current co-owner Jeff Williams says Ek was famous for his people skills.
Longtime associate Mo Schmidt also agreed Ek's ability to work with people stood out.
Ek started the business in 1965 after being a real estate broker in 1960. A graduate of both the College of Emporia and Emporia State University, Ek was voted as Emporia's Realtor of the Year in 1992. He was also active in the field, serving as a former president and secretary of the Emporia Board of Realtors and as a past director of the Kansas Association of Realtors.
In addition, Ek was heavily involved in the community, serving on the Emporia School Board, Emporia Enterprises board, ESU Foundation Board of Trustees and the United Way Board of Trustees. He was also a past president of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce.
Funeral services are pending.
