The Care Package for the Troops drive is fast approaching the end, and drive organizers had smiles on their faces after a special stop at Price Chopper on Saturday.
The stop led to a donation box being nearly full of items like beef jerky, gummy bears and batteries and close to $200 in donations. Lead organizer Diane Tebbetts says the troops appreciate all the donations that come their way.
This is the seventh annual care package drive. Normally, it wraps up shortly before Christmas, but this year there were no Kansas soldiers overseas during the holidays so Tebbetts decided to wait until troops were deployed before starting this drive.
Donations of beef jerky, gummy bears, batteries, phone cards and paperback books are welcomed, while donations of aerosol items, fireworks and chocolates have to stay home.
Drop-off sites include Town Royal, Mel's Tire, Country Mart North, Price Chopper, Graves Drugs, Waters True Value and VFW Post 1980. Donations will be picked up March 6. The main packing party is coming March 8 at the VFW post. For more information, call 757-1390.
