On Wednesday, the Emporia School Board announced it would hold public meetings for possibly resetting enrollment boundaries for the six elementary schools. The meeting dates have been set, and three are taking place next week.
Tuesday has patrons of William Allen White meeting at the school at 5:30 pm and Walnut patrons meeting at that school at 6:30 pm. Next Wednesday, Riverside patrons will meet at the school at 5:30 pm.
Timmerman, Logan Avenue and Village patrons will have meetings at their respective schools March 3 or 4, with a further discussion of proposed boundary changes by the school board March 12.
Superintendent Theresa Davidson says the current boundaries served the district well when they were reconfigured in 2003 to add Timmerman and Riverside. Declines in overall enrollment and changes in residential neighborhoods are causing school-by-school enrollments to shift out of balance, so the district is considering changes to keep students closer to their neighborhood schools and help manage transportation among other concerns.
