Weekend featuring numerous notable activities

Some big activities are coming this weekend.

The annual Polar Plunge benefits Special Olympics on Saturday. Once again, the plunge itself takes place at Mouse Lake, with meals before and afterward at the Emporia Senior Center. Organizer Jana Fornelli was a guest on Friday's Talk of Emporia; she laid out the schedule of events.

Sunflower Gymnastics will have White Auditorium hopping with its annual Winter Invitational from 8 am to 5 pm. Co-owner Dave Doemland says over 300 gymnasts are coming from the Central and Southern Plains to Emporia.

Volunteers are needed for spotting duty, so call 340-0831 if interested.

Emporia State is wrapping up Founders Day activities with a gala celebration at the Memorial Union Webb Hall. Music will be a key part of the evening, according to Alumni Relations Director Tyler Curtis.

Recognition of the Now & Forever campaign committee will be part of the evening. Activities start at 6 pm.

On Sunday, the award-winning music group Ladysmith Black Mambazo comes to Albert Taylor Hall. Arts Center Director Melissa Windsor says the performance will "change your life." The concert begins at 7 pm. Tickets are available at the Arts Center, Granada Coffee Company, Sweet Granada and Emporia Fitness.
