Emporia's overall crime statistics up, major case numbers down in 2013

Overall, Emporia's crime stats for 2013 were up from the prior year. However, major case numbers were down.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Owens says there were 1,201 adult arrests, up 203 from 2012. Juvenile arrests were down from 142 in 2012 to 121 last year.

Owens says there was one homicide -- the April 13 death of Adrian Peralta. Suspect Gabino Ruiz-Ascencio remains at large at this time.

A comparison of what EPD calls major cases from 2012 and 2013:

Meanwhile, Owens says an increase in traffic citations helped bring the number of accidents down. Owens says there were over 4,000 traffic offenses, up over 1,000 from 2012 -- and that doesn't include an additional 245 traffic warnings, which was up almost 70 from the prior year. Owens says accidents dipped from 450 in 2012 to 401 last year.
