A couple of two-day events are getting this weekend started Friday.
Veterans associated with the 1011th Army Reserve based out of Emporia and Independence will gather for a golf outing at the Municipal Golf Course beginning at 9 am Friday, followed by a social at Best Western.
Saturday's event list includes a wreath laying at 2 pm at the All Veterans Memorial and a dinner at Best Western.
Organizer Larry Scott is glad to get together with his buddies.
"We enjoy getting together," he said. "It's amazing. We used to tell a lot of war stories, but those are getting worn out so we don't tell as many as we used to."
Unit members were deployed to Vietnam in September 1968. Scott says the unit was "pretty much dissolved" after the Vietnam era, with it now serving as a transportation company.
Also beginning Friday is Fabulous Finds on 99, a series of garage sales and business deals stretching north and south along Highway 99 -- and straight through Lyon, Greenwood and Wabaunsee counties. Main Street Director Casey Woods says a flea market in the 300 block of Commercial is among the highlights.
"We've got great 'find' sacks at a number of businesses, both in the downtown area and with some of our members not in the downtown area," he said.
Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Susan Rathke says local businesses are ready for the turnout.
"That's giving all the merchants a chance to do some extra promotions and sidewalk sales," she said.
Over a dozen businesses have signed up in Emporia, with numerous yard sales along the highway also taking place from Severy to Alma.
