Planning Commission recommends two applications for approval

The Emporia-Lyon County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission recommended approval on two of the three applications on its agenda Tuesday night.

The board approved a conditional use permit requested by St. Mark's Lutheran Church for three lots -- 1508 and 1514 West 12th along with 1202 Garfield. This will allow the church to build a 12-foot-by-24-foot garage on the property.

Board members also approved a request of Mid-Kansas Properties for a minor plat laying out three lots at 30th and Crestview.

The board, however, denied Calvin Gunkel's request to re-zone 1315 West Ninth from single-family residential to medium-density residential. Gunkel was hoping to demolish the current home and build a duplex, but Planning Commission members reiterated concerns from earlier about spot zoning as the main reason for denial.
