Emporia Middle School eighth-grader Kenji Anderson is the 2014 Lyon County Spelling Bee champion.
Anderson correctly spelled "congressional" and "sedentary" to win after North Lyon County seventh-grader Jacob Lewis missed on "rejuvenate." Anderson and other spellers began asking for different pronuciations as they fielded the words. He says that approach helped.
Turning Point student Jorah Wilson was third, serving as the alternate for the Topeka Capital-Journal Regional Spelling Bee on March 8 at Topeka Seaman.
The spelling bee lasted seven rounds. It got off to a fast start with the first 26 spellers advancing to the second round, but four of the last six spellers in the round were eliminated -- and another 20 students were eliminated in the next three rounds leading to intermission.
This is the second straight year an Emporia Middle School student has won the county spelling bee. Tanner Standerwick won last season.
