Dodge City woman upgraded after Friday accident

The driver of a car that crashed into a shallow creek bed about four miles west of Emporia on Friday is improving at a Topeka hospital.

52-year-old Dodge City resident Laurie Terveen-Arreola apparently fell asleep at the wheel, veering off U.S. Highway 50 and driving into the creek just west of Road "C." Terveen-Arreola was airlifted to Stormont-Vail Hospital after a roughly hour-long extrication effort.

Terveen-Arreola was upgraded from serious to fair condition Saturday afternoon.

Three Emporia firefighters were taken to Newman Regional Health for possible frostbite after standing in the creek during most or all of the rescue process. Those names have not been released.
