EHS debate team hopes to defend state title as coach receives high honors

Emporia High's debate team is rolling into the Class 5A state tournament.

Freshman Addie Doudican was recognized as the state's top freshman novice at the Sunflower Novice State Debate Championship last weekend.

Doudican and partner Beth Wright finished third overall in the ninth-grade category.

Meanwhile, junior Parker Wood was the second-best novice debater, and the team of Wood and sophomore Alondra Garcia placed fifth. Overall, the team was second in the sweepstakes competition.

Coach Scott Bonnet believes his team will do well.

Bonnet has been at the helm since 2006, and his work -- and the team's long track record of success -- has put him in the Debate Coaches Hall of Fame. Bonnet gave the credit to his students.

The Emporia High debate team has consistently placed in the top four at the state level and top 10 nationally since he took over the program, finishing second in the country last year and winning the state novice title two years ago.

Bonnet will be inducted next year. He spent 14 years at McPherson before coming to Emporia.
