Block grant for improvements at one-time Newman's, Madelynn's location going before City Commission

Emporia city commissioners have development matters on their agenda for their action meeting Wednesday night.

Commissioners will hold a public hearing on a Community Development Block Grant application for 511 Commercial, the one-time location of Newman's Department Store and Madelynn's.

Bryan Whitmore leads a group that took ownership of the building last fall. The group is seeking a $440,000 grant, roughly one-quarter of the projected redevelopment costs. The scope of the redevelopment and potential use of the property have not been released.

The building has been vacant the past four years after Madelynn's was seized for failure to pay back taxes in fall 2009.

Commissioners are considering whether to join the Flint Hills Regional Council, much like Lyon County commissioners did last month, and they will have separate votes on membership and approval of a memorandum of understanding on that topic.

In separate business, commissioners may discuss an ordinance to adopt dispatch consolidation for Emporia Police and the Lyon County Sheriff's Office. Attorney General approval would be the next step before consolidation could take place.

The meeting starts at 7 pm at the Municipal Court Room.
