Polar Plunge 2014 adds fundraising arm

Polar Plunge 2014 is barely a month away.

The fundraiser for Special Olympics will be held Feb. 15 at Mouse Lake.

Newsmaker guest and event spokesman John Koelsch says there will be a new activity this year: the "Pluck-A-Duck," where people adopt a duck or a "quack pack" of ducks for a suggested donation.

More information is online at www.kansastorchrun.org.

Also on site will be a costume contest before the plunge. The Emporia Senior Center will be the hub of activities before and after the plunge, with breakfast, lunch and a silent auction.

Proceeds from the breakfast, lunch and auction benefit local Special Olympics teams, while proceeds from the actual plunge benefit Special Olympics statewide. If you're interested in participating, Koelsch says the best way to do so is by going online to www.ksso.org/plunge. If you want to donate to the silent auction, call Karen Pendelay at 344-0872.
