Big crowd expected for Cottonwood River flood mitigation meet

By Chuck Samples/KVOE News

Large-scale flood mitigation efforts are the topic of a special meeting at the Bowyer Community Building on Tuesday.

Zoning and Floodplain Manager Sam Seeley says ag producers have been interested in small-scale flood control measures for some time, but there are increasing calls for larger-scale projects.

Area residents are now increasingly calling for a new reservoir to be constructed between Marion Reservoir and John Redmond Reservoir.

Two weeks worth of heavy rain prompted and then aggravated floodwaters along the Cottonwood River basin in late July and early August.

The meeting, organized by local lawmakers, starts at 10 am and could last two hours. Representatives of the Kansas Water Office and area conservation districts are expected to attend.
