Dorneker: Medical issue may have prompted Garnett woman to leave car

The Garnett woman at the heart of an urgent search last week is now back with her family to receive additional medical attention.

Chase County Sheriff Richard Dorneker says 51-year-old Debra Johnston was released to her family Saturday night, several hours after she was discovered at a rural Chase County farmstead.

Dorneker says Johnston apparently suffered some sort of medical ailment, prompting her to ditch her car on the Kansas Turnpike between Emporia and Matfield Green on Wednesday afternoon. She followed tower lights south of the Turnpike to find shelter before a major winter storm began affecting the area Friday.

Numerous jurisdictions and volunteers from Chase, Lyon and Greenwood counties were involved in the search.
