Despite early glitches, new phone tree displaying promise for Sheriff's Office

Some fine-tuning will happen the next several days as the Lyon County Sheriff's Office moves away from its longstanding phone system.

A new phone tree went live Friday. Sheriff Jeff Cope says the new system has already lightened the load on dispatchers.

Cope admits there have been some glitches, with the system not allowing callers to get through. He anticipates the system should be largely trouble-free by the end of the week.

The new system lets callers call the main number at 342-5545 and connect to different departments or personnel. It also lets people access jail staff for questions about inmates -- and it lets people link to 9-1-1, although Cope says people should call 9-1-1 instead of the dispatch number in cases of emergencies.
