Emporia city commissioners may decide on which public buildings to exempt from the state's concealed carry law when they have their action meeting Wednesday night.
City Attorney Blaise Plummer has advised commissioners to issue an exemption for at least White Auditorium, if not other buildings. The auditorium is relatively secure, but the MIAA and Kansas State High School Activities Association have already said they won't have events at White unless there is an exemption.
Commissioners have been discussing their potential direction since passing a temporary six-month exemption in June. They could seek a four-year exemption, this giving them time to formulate a security plan for all the city's buildings.
In other business, commissioners will hear requests from Tyson Fresh Meats to change the zoning at West Hill Mobile Home Park next door and from Calvin Gunkel to change zoning at 1315 West Ninth.
The meeting is at 7 pm at the Municipal Court Room.
