Miss Kansas returns to Emporia for ESU Festival of Trees

Bidding on the Christmas trees involved in Emporia State's Festival of Trees will continue through the upcoming week after the festival's feature event Saturday.

Organizer Roger Heineken says there were 16 trees and six wreaths up for auction, with all the proceeds benefiting scholarships.

The highlight of the afternoon was an appearance by Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, who sang and signed autographs. Vail, who served as co-emcee for Emporia's All Veterans Tribute Veterans Show Off Your Talent show last month, tells KVOE News her time as Miss Kansas has opened her mind -- and her heart -- to those who suffered through bullying like she did as a child.

Vail has been considering dentistry as a career, but now she says she will pursue a speaking career. Vail says she gets 15 to 20 emails per day from girls and boys seeking advice on how to move forward with difficult personal issues like bullying or thoughts of suicide.
