Battle of the Badges event cancelled for Saturday; donations still accepted

The first-ever Battle of the Badges toy drive was supposed to wrap up Saturday at Guion's Showcase, but Emporia Police Officer Dominick Vortherms says their plans have changed. The event has been cancelled due to extremely cold weather conditions.

However, Vortherms says you can still donate.

Lyon County deputies are involved along with Emporia Police and Emporia firefighters. Toys go to foster kids in the TFI Family Services program. Currently the Sheriff's Office leads with 242 toys.

Those that are interested in donating a toy can drop them off at any of three spots: the Police Department, the Sheriff's Office, or Fire Station #2. Fire Captain Rick Peck says the competition is friendly, even though the Fire Department is "last."
