A lot of unique features are part of the Chamber of Commerce annual Christmas parade every year. On Tuesday night, one of those is a special food collection effort for kids.
Members of the Flint Hills Technical College graphic arts department are asking folks attending the parade to donate to Food for Students. Instructor Brian Crouch was a guest on our Morning Show this week with details on how people can help.
Student Ashley Cummins says it's important to donate items that kids can put in their backpacks, so people should avoid donations of canned goods. Instead, people should donate things like granola bars, macaroni and cheese, fruit cups and crackers.
Cash donations will also be accepted Tuesday night, with all monetary donations spent on food.
Crouch says nearly 70 percent of Emporia school district kids now are on free or reduced lunches, up from around 16 percent 20 years ago.
The parade starts at 7 pm in downtown Emporia, with the lighting ceremony in front of CableONE at 6:30 pm. 14 KVOE and KVOE.com will carry the parade live Tuesday night.
