Bonnet named Emporia Teacher of Year

Last week, William Allen White fourth-grade teacher Sheri Bonnet told KVOE she loved teaching during the American Education Week cookie delivery.

She apparently does a very good job at it. Bonnet found out she was Emporia's nomination for Kansas Teacher of the Year at a special assembly at the school Monday.

Bonnet says she was caught totally off guard.

Bonnet says teaching is something she has loved doing throughout her career, but she got a bit of a prompt from a college counselor who said her aspirations to be a physical therapist needed additional math classes.

Bonnet has been teaching at the Emporia district since 2006, serving as a reading specialist, English as a Second Language teacher, second-grade teacher and now a fourth-grade teacher. Prior to moving to Emporia, she taught 14 years in McPherson where she won that city's teacher of the year award three times.

The winner will be announced next November.
