Stabbing late Saturday night sends one man to hospital, another to jail

One man was stabbed and another is being held in Lyon County Jail after an incident late Saturday night.

Emporia Police responded to a fight call at approximately 10:42 pm Saturday night, at 412 East 7th in Emporia. When they arrived, they found 41-year old Gabriel Roman and 29-year old Guillermo Fuero-Mendoza lying in the kitchen of that residence. Roman had a stab wound to the chest, and Mendoza had a slight cut on his index finger. Both men were transported to Newman Regional Health.

Roman was then taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, although his current condition is unknown. Mendoza was released from Newman Regional, and promptly taken to Lyon County Jail. Formal charges are pending through the Lyon County Attorney's Office.

According to the official press statement, the fight started when the two men began arguing over money owed to Mendoza. Mendoza and Roman began fighting on the floor in the kitchen; that's when Mendoza took a knife and stabbed Roman in the chest. The incident is still under investigation.
