Proposed Striping Plan for 12th Ave.

The Traffic Safety Committee studied the request to make the southern lane on eastbound 12th at Commercial a right-turn only lane at its monthly meeting today. KDOT will not permit the City to designate it has right-turn only to prevent traffic from getting into the lane when turning from southbound Merchant only to realize it is right-turn only and have to quickly move over to the center lane. The Committee did approve moving the merge right sign one block to the west (just east of Commercial) to better inform drivers that a merge is ahead. In addition, the Committee approved restriping 12th so that the center lane becomes a left-turn only lane at Market, then striping east of Market a continuous left turn lane so traffic can turn left on southbound Market or northbound Highland. A new sign saying “Left Turn Only” will be posted just east of Commercial and west of Market near Beach Hall. In short, there will be one thru lane for east and west 12th plus a center lane for left turns. This should significantly improve drivers expectation where traffic is supposed to go and establish one through lane in the southern lane of eastbound 12th. I can e-mail you a visual picture of the proposed striping if you would like. The work could not be done until the weather warms up in the spring, but is expensive to mobilize crews for a small striping project. Therefore, the work will be included in the street rehab contract, which will probably start in June.
