Chuck Samples is a native of Omaha, Neb., and came to Emporia from Lincoln, Neb., in 2002 following several media jobs in and around Nebraska's capital city.
Chuck got his start in media in 1996 at KLIN Radio in Lincoln. Starting as an overnight board operator, he eventually became the afternoon news anchor, a play-by-play voice for boys' high school basketball, a member of the station's storm team, network producer of the University of Nebraska football pregame through postgame coverage and co-host of KLIN's weekday evening drive-time program "Live at Five" before departing to the print side of the business in 1999.
Chuck worked as a news and sports reporter for the Wahoo (Neb.) Newspaper for a year and spent two years as a sports copy editor at the Lincoln Journal Star before moving to Emporia.
Chuck has served KVOE as news director since December 2010, overseeing a department with as many as four full-time equivalent employees. He also coordinates KVOE's award-winning severe weather coverage and the station's Storm Team network of approximately 30 volunteer spotters. On the sports side, Chuck is the play-by-play voice of girls' high school basketball on KVOE-FM. He is the color commentator for Emporia State football and has done play-by-play for Emporia State women's basketball, baseball and softball on Mix 104.9. Chuck has won several awards for news, features, weather and sports coverage since resuming his broadcast career.
Chuck fell in love with radio, particularly sports broadcasting, when he was young. A baseball fan almost since birth, he was immediately drawn to the field by listening to Kansas City Royals broadcasters Denny Matthews and the late Fred White at the tender age of nine. That desire was furthered by listening to Nebraska football announcer Lyell Bremser in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Chuck and his wife, Ginny, an Emporia native, have one daughter. He enjoys photography, cooking, eating, drinking coffee, writing lyrics and playing bass.
